Winter cosiness at the K-TOTEM

Lobke Rondelez draws illustrations that are playful, colourful and a bit funny. An ideal match to translate all the winter cosiness into a new K-TOTEM design.

You can turn to illustrator Lobke Rondelez for printed matter, a new campaign image, a window drawing or she comes to illustrate live at your event. This all-round illustrator always delivers beautiful illustrations. For the K-TOTEM, she drew quite a few winter scenes brimming with cosiness.

An interview with Lobke:

Tell us a bit more about your design

The K-TOTEM has a special shape that is not so easy to dress up. I was keen to make the most of that shape by giving the up-and-down legs a function that made sense in my illustrations. I liked the idea of illustrating winter cosiness and using the totem's legs for sliding, skiing or sledding.

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

Inspiration can come from anywhere, of course, but still mostly when you're not doing it. So I go for an hour's walk every morning, inspiration guaranteed for a whole day of drawing!

And then, of course, it's a matter of sitting down in your studio and starting to work on it and finding out if and how an idea can work, polishing it, sketching it, coming up with new ideas while sketching, ... until the whole concept is right.

What are trends in the wider creative world that inspire you?

I obviously try to keep abreast of what's going on in the creative world by being present (a bit too much) on platforms like Instagram.

But real trends I try not to look for or incorporate, because they are so time-sensitive and I prefer to draw timeless illustrations that will still be there in a few years' time.

Of course, I do apply the ‘trend’ of taking more care of our nature and taking the climate into account, although I don't think that is a trend, but rather a keeper!

Which illustrators or creatives do you look up to?

I follow a lot of illustrators who play with (distorted) shapes and colours and actually create very graphic and playful work such as:

Anne Laval, Andrea Antinori, Lisa Laubreaux, Lucia Vinti,Charlotte Durance, Kirsten Sims and closer to home Leonard Cools whose expo I recently visited.

Work of illustrators listed according to enumeration above.

What do you think is the most beautiful spot in Kortrijk?

By far the Buda Island!

I love islands immensely and try to visit one every year while travelling.

But actually, I don't have to go very far at all, because there is actually already an island around the corner: Buda Island!

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I have long hoped to one day make a full-time living drawing illustrations and always set that as a goal 5 years down the line.

But in the meantime, my ambitions lie elsewhere: I would like to bring my illustrations to life in as many different ways as possible.

And that worked out well last year with a 100-square-metre wall in Roeselare, a 280-metre street (in Koksijde) and now the K-TOTEM!

On to more different kinds of mediums for my illustrations!
