Optical illusion on the K-TOTEM
3D motion designer Corneel Vaneeckhout aka VOXYZ searches for the boundary between order and illusion in his work. His graphic style, clean lines and diverse textures form the basis for a new K-TOTEM design that surprises and amazes.

Tell us a little more about your design
My goal was to create an optical illusion. The complex shape of the K-TOTEM made this challenging, but from certain angles the illusion comes into full focus. I wanted to create a contrast between the sleek, geometric lines of the totem and the organic shapes of the padding.
The Flanders Flooring Days, a major exhibition event for professionals in the floor covering sector, of which there are many strong players in the region, will take place in Kortrijk in early June. Designregio Kortrijk had asked me to use this as a starting point for my design. So the various textures in the design refer to various floor coverings.
Where do you get inspiration for your designs?
I draw inspiration from a variety of sources, including fellow designers and social platforms such as Behance and Instagram. Yet I find that my most creative, out-of-the-box ideas arise when I am away from the screen for a while. Running helps me a lot with this - while running, I get my best ideas.
What are some trends in the broad creative world that inspire you?
I try to avoid trends as much as possible because they come and go. I am following the rise of generative AI with some distance. While I know it can greatly facilitate workflow, it does not yet feel familiar to me to work with it.
What illustrators or creatives do you look up to?
I greatly admire studios like Panoply and ManvsMachine. The way they visualize things never ceases to amaze me. Their abstract motion simulations are a great inspiration to me and something I strive to master myself.

Last year started my freelance career and I hope to still be doing this in 5 years!
I am really enjoying myself and hope to keep growing as a motion designer and my projects only evolve.
What do you think is the most beautiful spot in Kortrijk?
The Marys Irish Pub 😅, the place where I prefer to spend my time. A good beer with dirty fries, yes please!
