Exhibition Designers In Residence Kortrijk: METAMORPHOSIS
Designregio Kortrijk hosted three young international designers for the 2025 edition of Designers in Residence Kortrijk. For 3 months, designers Lou Cruard, Kato Herbots and Uğis Albiņš immersed themselves in an intensive design research, inspired by the region's rich ceramic tradition and its transformative power. The result of their creative process is for the first time shown at rhizome_ on Friday 5 and Saturday 6 December. Welcome!

Lou Cruard questions the meaning of the brick wall as a structure that can divide culturally, but also connect. For this, she uses her own vanissage technique and questions how walls shape social relations and influence perception of space. Through this process, she examines how the act of making can reveal new ways of inhabiting the shared and the in-between.
Kato Herbots researched the landscape and geology of the clay pits in Kortrijk. After excavation, these often serve as landfills, which are later remediated and sealed with a layer of clean soil and are now often recreational parks. Based on this fact, she investigates contaminated soil as an alternative raw material in ceramics. The contaminated raw materials, baked into ceramics, are able to store the metals safely and give the eye unique aesthetic qualities.
Uģis Albiņš starts from his own visual observations in the city of Kortrijk to reveal connections and mechanisms that exist between the layers of urban life. Desert dust or industrial dust, each dust particle as addressable unit, highlights material infrastructures, entropy, and physical residues. Each lost and found object becomes an “addressable unit,” shaped by coincidence and its specific location, and later develops into part of an installation, in a process comparable to a digital structuring, where coordinated trajectories build a larger structure from individual elements.
