Lecture Erik Desombere
‘The love of letters is never far away’. Erik Desombere brings his story of 50 years of working with letters at cc de Steiger, Menen on 13 March at 8pm.
His story
In 1972, as a student at the Menen Academy of Drawing, Erik Desombere discovered the possibilities of letters during a simple assignment. This is where his ‘love of letters’ was born. This grew into fascination and passion. In his studies at Sint Lucas Antwerp, he was given the space to work with letters, to construct typographic ‘images’, to create a complete alphabet with minimal elements.
Professional assignments gave him the opportunity to further explore letters and letter relationships, words and word relations in typographic logos and graphic designs. Each time a thoughtful quest to find. The ‘love of letters’ is a message he also invariably imparted to his graphic design students.
Meanwhile, more than 50 years after the early beginnings, the love of letters is more than ever a passion.
In January 2024, Erik's ‘letters made to measure’ project won him the prestigious Henry van de Velde Award in the Graphics category, one of Belgium's most prestigious design awards. They showcase and award not only Flemish designers, companies and governments that use design intelligently, but also products, services and systems with a positive impact on society, the environment and the economy. He also received the coveted public award.
In August 2024, his work was awarded the Cultural Prize of the City of Menen.
